How To Reheat Frittata – The 5 Best Ways

Frittata is a popular egg-based Italian dish that is a perfect solution when you don’t know what to make with all the leftover meat and veggies with your fridge. With frittata, options are endless, but it is usually filled with carrots, peppers, and onions.

While some people don’t mind snacking on a cold frittata, it can never taste as good as the one straight out of the pan, so what is the best way to reheat frittata?

Microwave is the first option that comes to mind, but you can also use the oven, air fryer, toaster oven, or reheat it on the stovetop.

The best ways to reheat frittata

A frittata is a pretty simple dish when it comes to preparation since it practically just entails mixing all your favorite ingredients together. While the base is almost always eggs, you can experiment as much as you want with different kinds of filling and toppings.

Depending on the texture you’re going for, you may also add milk, to make it a bit fluffier. As far as the flavor combinations go, you can pretty much add any kind of cheese (such as feta) and all kinds of veggies, including mushrooms, broccoli, and tomatoes

When it comes to eating leftover frittata, it is clear you have to be very careful about its storage due to the ingredients. Eggs, milk, and other dairy products you may add (such as cheese) can easily go bad at room temperature.

It isn’t a good idea to leave your frittata at room temperature for longer than a few hours, but when refrigerated, it can last up to 3 days. Simply store it in an airtight container, make sure that the lid is sealed properly, and you’re good to go.

If you decide to freeze leftover frittata, whether it be in a freezer bag or a container, be sure to use it up in the following 3 months. Also, when you take out the frittata, before reheating it, you want to check the smell and the color to make sure it hasn’t gone bad.

Some people have trouble determining whether their frittata has gone bad. A spoiled frittata will switch color to green and yellow, which is a pretty accurate indicator. Also, you could notice some mold growing, especially on the cheese part.

Even if you notice only a single layer of frittata changing color or odor, it is necessary to throw it away. As we’ve already mentioned, it has a lot of ingredients that get spoiled easily, so you really don’t want to take your chances.

The frittata should be frozen at zero degrees Fahrenheit, and you can defrost it at room temperature. However, just like with the majority of other foods, you should never freeze frittata again after it has been thawed.

The best way to reheat frittata mainly depends on how much time you have, and whether you like your frittata soft and fluffy or crispy. Let’s see all the available options.

How to reheat frittata in the microwave

Whenever you have to reheat something, we bet the first association that comes to mind is a microwave. Indeed, it is the quickest, most convenient way of reheating your food, as long as you choose the right setting.

If you want to reheat egg frittata, a microwave is the quickest option, but you have to be very careful with the settings. If you adjust it to high temperature, you may end up with a mushy, soft frittata and overcooked veggies on the inside.

Therefore, we recommend covering the dish with a piece of microwave-safe plastic wrap or aluminum foil to avoid any splatter and to prevent the frittata from overheating. Also, this ensures that you will reheat frittata to keep a moist texture.

Also, if you use too high of a setting, the egg may become rubbery and flavorless, which is something you should definitely avoid. Choose a low setting instead to preserve the fluffy texture and crunchy veggies on the inside.

Here are the steps to reheat frittata in the microwave:

  1. Remove the frittata from the airtight container or the freezer bag and let it defrost/rest at room temperature.
  2. Place it into a microwave-safe dish and cover it with a piece of plastic wrap or aluminum foil.
  3. Choose a low setting and let it reheat for about 30 seconds.
  4. If you want to ensure that the frittata will remain soft and moist, place it on top of some damp paper towels.

How to reheat frittata in the oven

The oven is the best choice to reheat frozen frittata, and you don’t have to worry about the texture becoming rubbery, or the inside remaining frozen. Also, the oven won’t dry out the food, especially if you cover it with a piece of aluminum foil.

However, some may find it too big of a hassle to preheat their big, hot oven just to reheat a single frittata. Therefore, if you don’t have a big batch of the frittata to reheat, you may find other options, such as the air fryer and the toaster oven, much more convenient.

Other than that, since many people prepare their frittata in the oven in the first place, it is only natural to consider it for reheating, as well. It works just as good for refrigerated frittata as it does for frozen ones. Needless to say, a frozen one will take longer to reheat

Here are the steps to reheat frittata in the oven:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 °F for about 10 minutes, or until it reaches the temperature.
  2. Line your baking tray with parchment paper, or simply brush some oil on the bottom to prevent the frittata from sticking to it.
  3. Place the frittata inside the oven and let it cook for about 10-15 minutes if refrigerated, or 35-45 minutes if frozen – depending on whether you’ve defrosted it at room temperature or not.
  4.  After it reaches your desired level of crispiness and that characteristic golden color, remove the frittata from the oven.
  5. Set aside for 5-10 minutes before cutting it into pieces so it doesn’t crumble.

How to reheat frittata in an air fryer

An air fryer is yet another convenient appliance to use to reheat leftover frittata. As we’ve mentioned, it is a great alternative to your big, regular oven, especially if you don’t have a big frittata, or you just want to reheat a few pieces.

Another plus side of using an air fryer is that you don’t have to preheat it. It reaches the desired temperature much faster than your regular oven, and it doesn’t generate as much heat, so it is quite convenient for the summertime.

If you want the frittata to turn out soft and moist, cover it with a piece of aluminum foil to release all its juices and oils. If it is a bit dry to start with, you may want to cover it with a piece of a damp paper towel instead.

Here are the steps to reheat frittata in an air fryer:

  1. Set your air fryer to 300 °F (you can also preheat it if you want a crispier result).
  2. Put the frittata onto a dish or directly onto the air fryer rack.
  3. Cover it with aluminum foil or a damp paper towel if you want a softer texture.
  4. Cook the frittata for about 5-6 minutes if refrigerated, and for about 35-40 minutes if frozen.
  5. Remove the frittata from the air fryer and allow it to cool off a bit before serving it.

How to reheat frittata on the stovetop

For many people, the perfect frittata recipe is preparing it in a skillet on the stovetop, and then finishing it in an oven or toaster oven to get a golden crust on top. Just like you can make your frittata on the stovetop, you can also reheat it this way.

Of course, you want to make sure that the skillet you’re reheating your frittata in is non-stick, so you don’t ruin your frittata. Also, you should add a bit of oil to the bottom of the pan to prevent sticking, but to get a nice crust on the bottom, as well.

Here are the steps to reheat frittata on the stovetop:

  1. Heat your skillet (or any other pan) over medium-high heat and add a bit of oil or a piece of butter to the bottom of the pan.
  2. Wait until the oil or the butter heats up, and then place the frittata into the pan.
  3. Cook on one side for 3-5 minutes, and then flip to let the other side get brown, as well.
  4. Remove the frittata from the pan and place it onto a plate.
  5. Let it cool off for 5 minutes before cutting it into pieces.

How to reheat frittata in a toaster oven

A toaster oven, just like an air fryer, is the most convenient choice when you don’t feel like using your big oven. When you think about it, it is a waste of energy and time to preheat and use your regular oven to reheat a small frittata.

Of course, as we stated, you will use your oven for a big batch due to the space, but most of the toaster ovens can fit a single frittata. It is also a great choice to finish a frittata you’ve prepared in a skillet since it will get a nice crust on top.

Here are the steps to reheat frittata in a toaster oven:

  1. Set your toaster oven to 300 °F.
  2. Place your frittata onto a tray and cover it with aluminum foil or a damp paper towel if you prefer a softer texture.
  3. If you’d prefer a crunchy crust, brush the frittata with some oil, or add a small piece of butter on top.
  4. Place the frittata into the toaster oven and let it cook for about 5-6 minutes until it gets a nice golden color.
  5. You can also flip the frittata mid-cooking so you get a crust on both sides.
  6. Remove the frittata from the toaster oven and let it cool off a bit prior to serving.

Can you reheat frittata?

Yes, it is possible to reheat frittata and get a delicious result – both with refrigerated and frozen ones. We know you may be skeptical due to all the easily spoiled ingredients, but all you need to do is store the frittata properly.

Also, once you take the frittata out of the fridge or the freezer, you want to check for any signs of spoilage, such as color changes and weird odors, before even considering reheating it.

The oven is the number one choice for reheating a frittata, especially if you have a big batch or you want to reheat a frozen frittata.

A microwave, on the other hand, takes the win when it comes to the quickest method – but be careful not to choose a high setting.

Air fryer and toaster oven are great alternatives for the oven, especially if you don’t feel like preheating the oven. Lastly, you can reheat your frittata on the stovetop if you want a nice crust on both sides.
