The 5 Best Marine Microwaves

When buying electrical appliances it’s always recommended to do some research beforehand, but when it comes to boat microwave ovens, it’s fundamental to know what you’re looking for or you might risk some problems offshore.

Since there are specific characteristics to look for in a microwave for a boat, we decided to include an extensive guide on how to choose a marine microwave, which you can find at the end of the page.

Here, you will find what in our opinion are the 5 best marine microwaves. In order to choose them, we took into consideration all the fundamental specifics that a boat microwave should have, so you can be sure that these units tick all the boxes.

Commercial Chef CHM770W

Editor’s Choice
10/10 Our Score
  • Compact
  • Lightweight
  • Door handle
  • Auto-cook and auto-defrost
  • Easy to clean
  • No quick functions

With its 700 watts of power, this low-wattage microwave from Commercial Chef is the perfect unit to bring along with you on your sea adventures.

It is quite small and lightweight, so you can easily find an empty spot for it. Its white exterior is pleasing to the eye and will match well with the environment.

Although it’s not made for high-volume use, this little machine proved to be quite sturdy, so we believe it is meant to last a long time.

Of course, 700 watts of power translates into a longer cooking time than more powerful microwaves, but the results are worth the wait. In addition to the standard functions, the Commercial Chef CHM770W also offers the option to cook and defrost by weight, and a speed defrost button as well.

With this marine microwave, you don’t need to worry about forgetting your food inside of it, because not only the Commercial Chef CHM770W beeps four times when it’s done — it also beeps 3 times every minute until you remove the item left inside. We believe this is quite useful on a boat where it may be hard to hear the microwave beeper the first time around.

As with many other small microwaves with low wattage, this unit doesn’t have quick functions like the “add 30 seconds” button, and you will have to input the time at every use. However, we totally expected this and we don’t consider it a deal-breaker.

We highly recommend this microwave for marine use, and since it is also quite affordable it will surely make a sweet deal.

BLACK+DECKER EM720CB7

Most Versatile
9,5/10 Our Score
  • Compact
  • Loud beeping
  • One-touch functions
  • Express cook
  • Low visibility of the control panel

We already talked about this little jewel from BLACK+DECKER in another article, and upon testing it a second time, our opinion hasn’t changed at all — if anything, we’re only more and more pleased with the quality of this product.

In our previous review, we mentioned how the BLACK+DECKER EM720CB7 is so lightweight that is easy to move around, which makes it a perfect microwave to bring along on holiday, or for camping. Today, we want to add that this unit is a perfect small microwave for boats as well.

With a capacity of 0.7 cu. ft. and 700 watts of power, this compact microwave can fit anywhere you place it. Despite the reduced capacity, the interior is quite spacious and although it will not fit a full-size dinner plate, you will have no problem with anything else.

The BLACK+DECKER EM720CB7 has a quite loud beeper, and while this could be an annoying feature for a countertop microwave, it becomes a precious asset for a boat microwave.

The control panel is simple and intuitive, however, it may be hard to read in a low light environment because of the thin lettering over the black background. The panel features one-touch functions as well as the Express cook section.

In fact, with this microwave, you can cook quickly and easily because of the self-adjust power and time based on the weight and type of food.

Among other small microwave ovens for boats, this is the most technologically advanced, and a guarantee of quality at a fair price.

GE JES1072SHSS

Best Value For Money
9/10 Our Score
  • Compact
  • Lightweight
  • Loud beeper
  • One-touch cooking
  • Low visibility of the control panel

GE is a brand that doesn’t need any introduction, as it has been in the appliances field for more than a hundred years. As such, their products are extremely high quality and reliable.

The GE JES1072SHSS makes no exception, presenting itself as a compact and modern machine that can easily fit in a corner of your countertop, in your cabinet, or on your boat.

The design of this microwave is quite pleasing, and despite the reduced capacity of 0.7 cu. ft. the interior appears larger than it seems. Low wattage means slower cooking, so this microwave gives it best at reheating, rather than cooking from zero.

Among the microwaves in this list, the GE JES1072SHSS is the one that weighs the most with its 25.7 pounds but doesn’t let the appearance fool you because this is a model that is easy to move around. In fact, you may want to add a rubber mat or pins under it to avoid sliding accidents.

When the microwave is done, it beeps 3 times very loudly, so it’s impossible not to notice. Actually, this machine is overall quite noisy, so you will have a hard time forgetting that you used it. However, it features a function to mute it completely, if you so desire.

Just like the BLACK+DECKER EM720CB7, the only flaw we found in this microwave is the design of the control panel. While simple and intuitive, it might be hard to read in low light, because the surface is shiny and the letters are thin on the black background.

Apart from this minor inconvenience, we believe this is a good investment if you’re looking for a marine microwave that is solid and multifunctional.

COMFEE’ EM720CPL-PM

Best Seller
9/10 Our Score
  • Compact
  • Loud beeper
  • One-touch cooking
  • Economical
  • Not 100% stainless steel

We included COMFEE’ products in many of our articles because we believe that this brand produces high-quality machines that fulfill the most varied kitchen needs, often at very affordable prices.

In this article, we will present you the COMFEE’ EM720CPL-PM, which is a perfect microwave for boats.

From the design alone, this model would be worth the purchase. In fact, the pearly white surface and the clear and easy-to-read control panel are quite stunning.

The control panel includes a quick one-touch menu, an Express Cook keypad, an “add 30 seconds” button (which we used quite often given the low wattage of this model), an Eco Mode, and a Mute Option.

If this marine microwave were to be used at home, we would absolutely recommend using the Mute function, because when the microwave is done, it beeps 5 times very loudly. However, when you’re on a boat this function could be a life-saver.

The COMFEE’ EM720CPL-PM makes full use of its 700 watts and heats food evenly, hardly leaving any cold spots. Only the popcorn option could probably be improved, as we noticed that it leaves out some kernels.

Overall, this unit works really well for its power and price, and it’s hard to find a flaw in it, but since we strive to be completely honest, some parts of the microwave are not made of steel but of plastic, which might become a problem if you use it on a boat for a long time without a cover.

However, for the occasional boating, this microwave will be a great companion and given how economical it is, we think this model is great value for money.

Kenmore 70729

Budget Option
Kenmore 70729
9/10 Our Score
  • Easy to operate
  • Simple and intuitive panel
  • Compact
  • 10 power levels
  • Efficient
  • No kitchen timer

Kenmore is another brand that keeps surprising us with its simple but sturdy microwaves. The Kenmore 70729 is really powerful for its size and wattage, to the point where you wouldn’t believe it only works with 700 watts of output.

The control panel of this boat microwave is kept minimal and simple, in fact, you will find an Auto-cook function with a menu printed beside it, the three essential buttons for Power, Defrost, and Clock, a keypad, and a Start and Stop button that also works as a Child Lock and Adds 30 Seconds function.

For this reason, the Kenmore 70729 reminded us of a microwave with dial controls, which are known for being very easy to operate.

Since this model features a release button, it’s better to place it against a wall or a solid surface, because it is so lightweight that you may end up pushing it back while trying to open the door. This is a common occurrence with lightweight microwaves, so we do not consider it a deal-breaker.

The Kenmore 70729 doesn’t have an independent kitchen timer like other ovens and microwaves, however, we do not believe this to be fundamental on a boat, because it’s more useful in a kitchen.

With its 0.7 cu. ft. of capacity, this compact but hardworking unit is sure to fulfill all of your microwave needs while you’re at sea.

How to choose a marine microwave.

Choosing a microwave for your boat is actually really easy, but given the number of features you need to take into consideration, it greatly reduces your choice of microwaves.

In order to guide you through this purchase, let us break down all the main features a marine microwave should have.

Wattage

When you’re riding the waves offshore, everything electrical on your boat has to rely on the limited batteries you have. That’s why choosing a microwave with reduced wattage is the only possible choice if you don’t want to run out of power too soon.

All the microwaves we listed work with an output of 700 watts, which is an ideal compromise between power and performance. Some microwaves, like the COMFEE’ EM720CPL-PM or the Kenmore 70729 guarantee very good results even with limited power.

Size

On a boat, things can get quite packed easily and it might be hard to find a free spot for a new appliance. Choosing a small microwave can be the solution you need in this case.

Luckily, the market is full of compact microwaves like the GE JES1072SHSS or the BLACK+DECKER EM720CB7, which appear small but have a good internal capacity.

Control panel

While offshore, your boat is bound to be covered in salt water, sand, and other dirt, which eventually ends up everywhere, but especially in small spaces.

Microwaves with tangible buttons and dials are a magnet for this kind of material, and it becomes hard and time-consuming to wipe them clean every time.

We recommend choosing a microwave with a touchpad like the Commercial Chef CHM770W, which can be wiped clean quickly and smoothly.

Material

Everything on a boat should be water-resistant or at least made to last for a long time in that kind of environment.

Luckily, most microwaves on the market today are made of stainless steel, but if you were to choose a machine of mixed material like the COMFEE’ EM720CPL-PM you can always consider using a waterproof cover for it.

Sound

As you may have noticed, we stressed the importance of a loud beeper in microwaves that are meant for marine use. That’s because in that kind of environment it may be hard to hear the beep when you’re on deck or elsewhere.

Forgetting the food inside would not only ruin your meal but also translate into a useless waste of energy, so you want to be sure you get the food out as soon as it’s done.

The Commercial Chef CHM770W is our favorite in this case because it also has loud reminders every minute you leave the item in the microwave. The BLACK+DECKER EM720CB7 and the GE JES1072SHSS also have quite loud beepers that are hard to ignore.
