The Best Smart Microwaves

Why choose a smart microwave oven? For most people, it’s simply a matter of comfort.

In fact, a wifi microwave can work with your virtual assistant and be controlled through voice only. It’s a great advantage in many situations, for example when you’re not in the room or when you’re cooking and you have dirty hands.

Having an internet connected microwave could be a great help for people with disabilities as well. Blind, visually impaired people, or all of those people who have debilitating diseases might have a hard time using the control panel of a microwave and may benefit from a microwave with wifi.

Below you will find our list of the 5 best smart microwaves. Before choosing your future microwave, also check out our final section on how to choose a smart microwave, which might clear some of your doubts.

Toshiba ML-EM34P(SS)

Editor’s Choice
10/10 Our Score
  • Large capacity
  • Powerful
  • Works with Alexa and Google Assistant
  • Sound On/Off
  • Humidity Sensor
  • Hard to understand when cooking is done

You may be wondering why we put “too quiet” as a flaw when many people would pay extra money to have a quiet microwave. We already knew the Toshiba ML-EM34P(SS) was a silent microwave since we have reviewed it before.

However, not only this unit works quietly and features an option to turn off the sounds, but the beeper in itself is very quiet even when the sound is On. Now, this is a personal preference, but when you’re in another room you may not hear that the microwave is done cooking and there is no reminder beep either.

Apart from this detail, which can be an issue or a non-issue depending on your taste, this microwave works flawlessly. Even if it weren’t an internet connected microwave, the Toshiba ML-EM34P(SS) would be a wonderful kitchen appliance to have.

The last time we talked about this model, we mentioned how the clock seemed to have a timezone issue and always reverted back to the default settings through the App. Since then, it seems that this problem has been solved, as we have not encountered this issue this time around.

The Toshiba ML-EM34P(SS) has a capacity of 1.3 cubic feet and 1100 watts of output, which means this is the perfect microwave for families and a great heavy-duty machine in general. You can fit any size plate in the large pizza oven and it’s powerful enough to cook anything to perfection.

Despite its internal capacity, this connected microwave is not as heavy nor as cumbersome as it sounds. In comparison with other microwaves of the same capacity, the Toshiba ML-EM34P(SS) is a little smaller and lighter, weighing “only” 35 pounds.

One of the best things about this microwave is that it’s both an Alexa enabled microwave and a Google Assistant one. For best results, it’s better to keep the speaker in the kitchen or otherwise close to the microwave.

Other functions of this wifi microwave include 23 menu presets with the most popular food, a humidity sensor that can adjust power and cooking time automatically, and an ECO mode that could help you save some money on your energy bills.

It’s quite surprising that the Toshiba ML-EM34P(SS) manages to achieve all of this while remaining a microwave under 150$. We believe this model is worth every penny and it will completely revolutionize your cooking life.

Amazon Smart Oven

Most Versatile
Amazon Smart Oven
9.5/10 Our Score
  • Convection Cooking
  • Air Fryer
  • Echo Dot included
  • Large capacity
  • Easy to set up
  • Slow cooking

When looking for an Alexa powered microwave one of the best choices is to go for an Amazon microwave. Amazon is constantly updating and enriching its line of voice-controlled products and the Amazon Smart Oven is one of the two wifi enabled microwaves from the brand.

More than a simple microwave, the Amazon Smart Oven is an all-around kitchen appliance that can replace your old traditional oven and improve your cooking experience.

Ideal for those who don’t like to stand-by in the kitchen waiting for the food to be done, and for those who wish to have fewer appliances to clean, since this oven is a 4-in-1 product: microwave, convection oven, air fryer, and food warmer.

As such, the Amazon Smart Oven works on different outputs: 1000 watts for the microwave, 1400 for the convection oven, and 1300 for the food warmer.

Everything can be done through voice commands, and you can also scan the product’s barcode through the Alexa App so that the oven knows exactly the kind of food it’s going to cook.

The results are quite satisfying: this microwave reheats, cooks, and warms to perfection, even though some functions can be quite slow in comparison with a traditional oven. The convection cooking in particular takes a few more minutes than expected.

When using the convection oven or the air fryer, you need to preheat it just like you would with a normal oven. This function can be carried out through Alexa as most other functions of this multifunctional microwave.

Make sure to have space on your countertop because the Amazon Smart Oven is quite large and heavy, but given how many functions and presets it features, it is no surprise that this is a big and solid microwave.

The internal capacity is 1.5 cu. ft. so it’s quite spacious in comparison to the average microwave and can fulfill the needs of a family.

Although it’s the most expensive item on this list, we believe it is worth the price considering that the package includes an Echo Dot device, so this can be a great microwave to start your very own smart home.

Sharp ZSMC1449FS

Best Value For Money
Sharp ZSMC1449FS
9/10 Our Score
  • Certified Popcorn Preset
  • Echo Dot included
  • Over 70 Alexa Voice Commands
  • Large capacity
  • Easy to set up
  • No Sound On/Off option

Since their very first appearance on the market microwaves have been mainly used for reheating leftovers and heating snacks, among which popcorn is surely a customer favorite.

The Sharp ZSMC1449FS has an Orville Redenbacher’s Certified Popcorn Preset that fulfills the needs of the biggest popcorn lovers. It’s enough to say “Alexa, microwave classic popcorn” and you will have your delicious snack ready to eat for your movie night.

In fact, this microwave works with Alexa, and it comes as a stand-alone product or in a combo with the new 4th generation of Echo Dot. For the price it has, we believe this is a good investment whether you already have a speaker or not since a second speaker it’s always useful and you can leave it beside the microwave.

With over 70 voice commands, the only thing you will manually need to do is to place the food inside the oven. As for the rest, you can relax and do your thing while controlling this unit through Alexa only.

The Sharp ZSMC1449FS is quite large, with a capacity of 1.4 cubic feet and a weight of 39.3 pounds. It’s not that heavy for the capacity it has, and its weight is a guarantee of solidness, as this microwave doesn’t budge easily.

The setup is really intuitive and easy, even for those who haven’t used Alexa related products before. It’s enough to connect the microwave through the designated button and Alexa should be able to recognize it immediately. After that, you just need to follow a few simple steps to complete the setup and you’re able to use the microwave immediately.

Among the products we tested, this was probably the easiest to set up and its connection to Alexa has been quite stable for the whole duration of the testing period.

The Sharp ZSMC1449FS has “only” 1000 watts of output, so it’s not one of those super-powered microwaves that can cook-it-all, but we’d say it’s a medium-volume microwave that fulfills most of the requirements for a home microwave.

Amazon Basic Microwave

Best Seller
9/10 Our Score
  • Perfect for popcorn lovers
  • Compact
  • Lightweight
  • Economical
  • Alexa device not included
  • Small capacity

It’s not surprising that the first microwave to work with Alexa would be the Amazon Basic Microwave. Despite being a starting point in the microwave product line of the market colossus, this little unit has it all.

This is the Amazon Alexa microwave par excellence, and it’s so easy to set up and use that you can even teach your kids to do it. In fact, the Amazon Basic Microwave is not some kitchen monster, it only has a few necessary functions to carry out the most popular tasks of your everyday life.

With its 700 watts and a capacity of 0.7 cu. ft., it’s perfect for students and offices. It might be too small to be a family microwave unless you don’t mind cooking one dish at a time. However, having a low wattage microwave means saving on your energy bills and also doing a good deed for the planet.

We already reviewed this microwave when we talked about the best microwaves for popcorn. Indeed, the Amazon Basic Microwave has a dedicated popcorn option that sets time and power automatically when you input the weight of the bag. This way, you’re guaranteed fluffy and perfectly cooked popcorn for many years to come.

No Alexa device is included with this microwave, but if you’re thinking of starting a smart home, this is the best and easiest starting point.

It comes at a very small price, probably the cheapest smart microwave you can find as of now on the market, so we believe it to be a good investment for your cooking life.

Although the capacity is officially 0.7 cubic feet, it may be a little on the smaller side. This microwave really doesn’t take much space on the countertop and it’s so lightweight that it’s easy to move around or bring along.

What makes the Amazon Basic Microwave such a best seller? After testing it over and over again, we can say for sure that the quality it delivers despite being such an economical appliance is what makes this wifi microwave so appealing.

GE JES1097SMSS

Budget Option
9/10 Our Score
  • Works with Alexa and Google Assistant
  • Scan-to-cook technology
  • Stainless steel
  • Compact
  • Easy to clean
  • Barcode scanner

If you’re on a budget and you’re looking for microwaves under 200$, the GE JES1097SMSS is your best choice.

This mid-range microwave is perfect for old people, visually impaired people, or anyone who wishes to touch the microwave as little as possible, in fact, you can operate it hands-free, as the only button you actually need to push is the door one. The rest can be handled with Alexa or Google Assistant.

The setup is not as quick and intuitive as the Amazon Basic Microwave, because this one is not made to work with Alexa only, so you have to get both the microwave and your home assistant ready to work.

For the elderly, people with disabilities, or simply those customers who aren’t really well-acquainted with this new technology, this might mean that they will need someone to set it up for them. However, once the microwave is connected, it’s really easy to use.

The GE JES1097SMSS uses Scan-to-cook technology in order to heat your food in the most suitable way. You can use the barcode scanner on the GE app, and the microwave will do everything on its own, freeing you from the burden of having to guess the right cooking time and power level needed.

The barcode scanner is probably the best and worst feature of this microwave. While it works really well, it certainly needs to be updated to include many more products because at the time we tested this microwave, the scanner only recognized 1 out of 10 products we submitted.

The GE JES1097SMSS has a capacity of 0.9 cu. ft. so it’s somewhere between a small and a medium unit. It’s quite compact for a microwave of this size and weight (33.7 pounds), and it can fulfill the needs of the average family, but can also fit into a smaller kitchen or a dorm.

As many modern microwaves nowadays, also this one is made completely of stainless steel, which makes it very durable, easy to clean, and most of all, it doesn’t absorb food odors and won’t release funny smells around the room.

While the GE JES1097SMSS is not the cheapest microwave on the list, it’s the ideal budget microwave because for a medium price you can get an appliance that is multifunctional, technologically advanced, and made to last for a long time.

How To Choose A Smart Microwave.

Smart microwaves are one of the latest “trends” in the market, so you won’t have as big of a choice as you normally would. Nonetheless, it might be difficult to choose the perfect voice-controlled microwave to fulfill your needs.

When choosing a microwave that works with Alexa or other domestic AI, the virtual assistant can be a starting point. Other than that, the microwave you’re going to purchase should fulfill your needs and those of your family as much as possible, so there are some personal considerations to make.

Virtual assistant

Most wifi microwaves work with Alexa, however, this isn’t the only AI assistant on the market, so this is something to keep in mind when choosing your smart microwave.

Microwaves that work with both Alexa and Google Assistant include the Toshiba ML-EM34P(SS) and the GE JES1097SMSS.

As a matter of comfort, it’s recommended to buy a dedicated speaker to keep beside your microwave, so you don’t have to shout across the house all the time.

Although most people will choose either Alexa or Google Home devices and stick to the same brand, the two smart assistants can work together in the same house.

So if you already have one of these speakers, but wish to buy a microwave that doesn’t support the one you have, you can always purchase a different one specifically for your microwave.

Multifunctional

Today it’s harder to find a single-task microwave than a multifunctional one. That’s because microwaves have evolved in order to fulfill more and more of our cooking needs.

The goal of microwave producers is to take the cooking burden off our shoulders, and as such multifunctional microwaves are the perfect solution for those who can’t or don’t wish to spend much time in the kitchen.

Microwaves like the Amazon Smart Oven and the Sharp ZSMC1449FS are not just machines to reheat leftovers and occasionally pop your corn, but actual ovens that can carry out more complicated cooking, and often feature technology that automatically adjusts the firepower based on the type of food.

If you’re looking for a smart microwave, you’re probably looking to make your home smarter as well. In that case, a multifunctional microwave is the way to go.
