Peel the potatoes and cut them into 1- to 2-inch pieces.
Put the potatoes in a large pot and cover them with water.
Add 1 tablespoon of salt to the water.
Place the pot on the stove and turn the heat to high.
Bring the water to a boil.
Boil the potatoes for 10-15 minutes until they break apart easily with a fork.
Drain the potatoes thoroughly in a large colander.
Return the potatoes to the dry pot.
Mash the potatoes over low heat to allow the steam to escape.
Turn off the stove and add the butter.
Add the cream cheese, cut into smaller pieces.
Pour in the half-and-half.
Mash the mixture together until smooth and creamy.
If using, stir in the roasted garlic cloves.
Season with additional salt to taste if needed.
Serve while hot.
