Ingredients
  
  • 3 cups dry navy beans
  • 6 cups water
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 pound bacon or ham diced
  • 1 medium onion chopped
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup pancake syrup
  • 1 teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • Salt to taste
Instructions
 
  • Add the dry navy beans to a bowl and cover them with water.
    Let them soak overnight.
    After soaking, drain and rinse the beans thoroughly.
  • In a large saucepan, combine 6 cups of water and 1 teaspoon of baking soda.
    Bring the water to a boil, add the soaked navy beans, and let them boil for 10 minutes.
    Drain and set aside.
  • In a Dutch oven or a large oven-proof dish, cook the bacon or ham over medium heat until it turns golden brown.
    Add the chopped medium onion and cook until it becomes translucent.
  • Add the boiled beans to the Dutch oven along with the brown sugar, pancake syrup, dry mustard, black pepper and salt.
    Mix all the ingredients well, coating the beans with the savory flavors.
  • Preheat your oven to 300°F (150°C).
    Cover the Dutch oven or oven-proof dish with a lid or aluminum foil and bake the beans for 3 to 4 hours until they are tender and have absorbed the rich flavors of the sauce.
  • Once the beans are done, carefully remove the dish from the oven, and serve your delicious Grandma Brown's Baked Beans as a side dish to your favorite main course or on their own as a nutritious source of protein.
