Preheat your oil in a deep fryer or large pot to 350°F.
Let it heat while you prepare the chicken.
Combine the flour, salt, and pepper in a large bowl.
Mix it well to ensure it’s evenly seasoned.
In another bowl, blend the buttermilk and water.
This mixture will help your coating stick to the chicken.
Pat the chicken dry using paper towels.
Dip each piece into the flour mixture, then the buttermilk mixture, and back into the flour.
Shake off any excess flour.
Carefully place the chicken into the hot oil.
Fry for about 6-7 minutes on each side or until golden brown.
Use a meat thermometer to confirm reaching a safe internal temperature of 165°F.
